THE GUIDE / choosing
Cheap polytunnels: decide what would make one worthwhile (UK)
Define the job, compare the complete package and ask the questions that matter before committing to a budget tunnel.
A cheap tunnel is worthwhile only if it does the job you are buying it for. That sounds obvious until a low headline offer distracts from an awkward door, an unsuitable layout or an unanswered question about replacement parts.
Price alone is not a useful verdict. Start by deciding what a satisfactory purchase would look like, then check the exact kit against that description. We have not ranked budget models or verified any product’s performance on this page.
Set the job before setting the shortlist
Write down what you need to put inside and how you intend to use it. Is the aim a limited growing project, a first attempt at managing more covered space, or a long-term layout you do not want to redesign? Those are different buying decisions.
Also decide what would make the purchase a failure. Perhaps the equipment cannot pass through the opening, the beds leave no usable route, or the instructions do not answer a question that matters for your site. Put those conditions on paper before browsing.
A short list of requirements is more useful than a vague hope that the kit will be “good enough”. It gives you a reason to reject a purchase without needing an elaborate product ranking.
Compare the package you would actually receive
Ask for a written list of included components and chosen options. Check that the listing, assembly instructions and quote refer to the same model and size. Keep a copy of the relevant documents so that later questions concern the product you ordered, not a similar-looking item.
Useful questions include:
- What dimensions describe the clear door opening and usable growing area?
- Which parts and fixings are supplied, and which are not?
- Where are the assembly and care instructions for this exact model?
- How would you identify and order a replacement cover or other spare?
- What does the written warranty cover, exclude and require you to do?
A long specification table is not automatically an answer. Check that the figures have a defined meaning and that you can relate them to the layout or task in question.
Do not borrow the photograph’s layout
Draw your own beds, pots or staging. A display photograph does not establish that your equipment and working routine will fit. Use the bed-and-path calculator for the rectangular arithmetic, then ask the supplier about usable space, doors and frame clearances.
If you already own the things that will go inside, arrange them temporarily in the proposed footprint. Try moving around them. Discovering an access problem at this stage costs less effort than rebuilding a growing layout after the purchase.
The exercise is about your plan; it does not establish whether a frame, fixing system or covering is appropriate for the location.
A low initial outlay is only one part of the decision
We do not quote product prices. Check current price with the supplier, including the options and services you actually intend to use.
Keep a separate note of required preparation, assembly arrangements and any components excluded from the quote. Ask about replacement availability and the process for identifying the right part. Do not assume that a generic-looking replacement is compatible.
This is not a claim that a budget product necessarily costs more over time. It is a way to make a purchase decision without ignoring the work and unanswered questions around it.
When to stop and ask again
Pause the purchase if the supplier cannot identify the instructions for the exact kit, explain what is supplied or answer a question essential to your intended use. A discount is not an answer to a missing specification.
The same applies if your site requirements are unresolved. Obtain the relevant council or allotment-site advice rather than treating a low purchase price as a reason to skip that check. Use the maker’s model-specific instructions for installation and fixing; this page supplies no alternative anchoring method.
If the kit meets the written job and its limitations are acceptable to you, it may remain a candidate. If it requires you to ignore one of your essential conditions, remove it from the list. There is no need to turn that into a verdict on every cheap tunnel.
Research status
No budget model, frame specification, cover lifespan, wind rating or warranty has been verified for this guide. Product recommendations will follow only after dated official records have been checked.
Keep the shortlist short enough to ask each supplier the same questions. A complete answer is more useful than another page of offers.
